George W. Butler, Jr.
Rev. George W. Butler, Jr., was instrumental in the founding of our
First Baptist Church, and the last pastor of our church prior to the temporary
closing of its doors due to difficult economic times and the outbreak of the
Civil War.
According to the History of Panola County, George Jr. was born in 1822, and came
to Texas with his parents in the 1850's. He married Edna C. King in July 1863
in Panola County. By this time he was already a practicing Baptist minister.
He and Edna had a family of eight children by 1878. Rev. Butler died April 7,
1885, and is buried in Panola County.
Rev. Butler kept a personal journal of his visits, and of his missionary work
in Panola County. His journal was copied years ago, and a copy of it was
provided by Larry Crawford. This journal was written in 1857 and continues
through March of 1860. On page 19 of the scanned pages you can view his notes
of the founding of First Baptist Church of Carthage, TX.
